Note: I’m an obviously caucasian girl from Jamaica born to British parents, and have been taking a year off to travel around America. I’m fully aware that I speak in mainly Patois, and try to tone it down somewhat, as some people occaisionally become offended, thinking that I’m taking the mickey when it’s my natural accent.
Me: That’ll be seventeen dollars, then.
Customer: How dare you!
Me: Excuse me, miss?
Customer (to my co-worker): I don’t want no black girl-
Coworker (confused): She’s not b-
Customer (getting louder):-ND WHOEVER HEARD OF A BLACK GIRL WORKIN AT AN ART GALLERY DONT SHE KNO-
Coworker: Ma’am, please.
Customer (with awful put-on accent: GET N GO BACK TO YA HOME COUNTRY, GIRLLL, BAG A BASKETBALL PLAYAAAA
Coworker: Ma’am, that is incredibly insensitive, please leave the store.
Customer: HOW DOES SHE LIKE IT? MY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REPRESSED FOR A THOUSAND YEARS-FIRE THAT BITCH.
Coworker: Ma’am, with all due respect, you’re white, and she’s Jamaican.
